As the character who put together the GLAAD stats that Richard Goldstein attributes to in his column "The Disappearing Queer" [Left trap May 10], I am keenly aware of the decrease in LGBT characters upon network television. As the former entertainment media director at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, I was impacted when we finished our report and realized that we were indeed beginning to disappear in the midst of a colossal national discussion around gay fights. There is no question that unles we make our voices heard as a community and as consumer this tend may continue on its circulating path.

That said, I take issue with several of Goldstein's insinuations and omissions from his article. I am publicly vice president of public relations for a gay and lesbian network called Here, which is available in above 40 million homes across the fatherland Goldstein fails to mention this premium cable network, which is exclusively dedicated to telling stories about the gay and lesbian community for the gay and lesbian audience. He marginalizes all cable networks when this is where a certain number of of the most authentic stories can be found

Goldstein also dismisses "queer-themed indie" films as being unimportant because of their limited reach. Again, that is a faulty and dangerous implication upon his part. Last year a gay indie film named Latter Days, about a gay Mormon, was plucked out of Salt Lake City because of constraining force from local religious groups. Not solitary did the film finally exhibit it opened across the native land in over 40 cities. I heard from many gay Americans forward how much they loved the film because they saw themselves in the story. That story plane gave a few the courage to proceed out of the closet.

Queer-themed indie film plays an important part in changing people's hearts and minds and making a real difference to those questioning who they are. While I appreciate Goldstein's call to action, I would ask that he not lance the baby out with the bathwater. Now more than till doomsday every part of our community counts
